About Us

Rewriting India's future: "No Child Should Choose Between Bread and Book."

Bread and Book Education Initiative

The Genesis of Bread and Book Foundation

The Bread and Book Foundation (BBF) was founded on the belief that hunger, educational deprivation, and inequality are interconnected challenges that must be addressed together to create lasting change.

Established in 2021, BBF emerged from a collective vision of professional social workers committed to supporting vulnerable communities across India. The foundation was initiated by Founder Sreelekha Chandran, a teacher from Thrissur, Kerala, whose field experience highlighted critical gaps in child-focused education. Guided by the principle that no child should choose between bread and books, this idea evolved into a structured and scalable social initiative.

From grassroots, volunteer-led efforts to a recognized non-governmental organization by 2024, BBF has grown through consistent impact and collaboration. Today, with 80G and 12A certifications, BBF delivers integrated programs in nutrition, education, and basic needs—empowering children and families to break cyc

Our Vision

An India where no child is forced to choose between survival and education, and where hunger, ignorance, and inequality no longer define a person’s future. We envision empowered communities where children grow with nourishment, learning, and dignity, and where sustainable grassroots solutions enable every individual—regardless of background—to realize their full potential.

Our Mission

Bread and Book Foundation is committed to breaking cycles of poverty at the grassroots by addressing the fundamental needs of children and vulnerable communities. Through education access, nutrition support, and holistic community development, we focus on long-term empowerment over short-term relief. By working with communities, institutions, and government initiatives, BBF builds sustainable systems that protect childhood, strengthen families, and create lasting change across generations.

Nourishing Bodies. Empowering Futures

At Bread and Book Foundation (BBF India), we work at the intersection of hunger and education because a child cannot learn on an empty stomach. Through our meal support initiatives, we ensure that children from underserved communities receive nutritious food regularly, helping them stay healthy, focused, and consistent in their schooling. Our nutrition programs also support young children, addressing early-life malnutrition that can impact growth, learning ability, and overall well-being.

Alongside food security, BBF provides practical educational support to children who are most at risk of dropping out. We distribute school supplies, uniforms, and learning materials, offer scholarships where needed, and support children through basic tutoring and digital literacy initiatives. By creating access to safe learning environments—especially for girls and children from marginalized backgrounds—we help remove everyday barriers that keep education out of reach.
